About Ras Al Khaimah

Ras Al Khaimah is the UAE's best-kept secret. While tourists cluster in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the northernmost emirate offers something completely different: the dramatic Hajar Mountains, ancient Dhayah Fort, pristine beaches on the Arabian Gulf, and an authenticity that feels untouched by mass tourism.

The mountains here are spectacular — rugged, ancient, and utterly unlike anything you'll find further south. Jebel Jais, the UAE's highest peak at 1,934 metres, is home to the world's longest zipline and some of the most breathtaking views in the Arabian Peninsula. Our RAK Mountain Safari takes you deep into this landscape by 4x4, through wadi crossings and traditional mountain villages.

RAK is also emerging as a luxury beach destination, with some excellent resorts along its long Arabian Gulf coastline. The Dhayah Fort — the last remaining hilltop fort in the UAE — offers extraordinary views over mangroves and the sea. This is the UAE that most visitors never see.

Top Attractions

Jebel Jais

The UAE's highest mountain at 1,934 m. Home to the world's longest zipline (2.83 km at up to 150 km/h) and the world's longest toboggan run. Sweeping views on clear days into Oman.

Hajar Mountains

The ancient mountain range that runs along the UAE's eastern spine. Our 4x4 mountain safari navigates rocky wadis, terraced farms, and traditional Emirati mountain villages.

Dhayah Fort

The last remaining hilltop fort in the UAE, perched dramatically on a rocky crag above a palm grove. Dating from the early 19th century, it offers extraordinary 360° views over RAK.

Al Hamra Village

A beautifully preserved traditional fishing village from the early 20th century — one of the last intact pearl-fishing settlements in the UAE, now undergoing careful restoration.

RAK Beaches

Long stretches of uncrowded beach on the Arabian Gulf — far less developed than Dubai, with clear water and a peaceful atmosphere. Several luxury beach resorts line the northern coast.

Wadi Showka

A popular hiking destination in the Hajar foothills — a rocky wadi canyon with natural pools, dramatic cliff faces, and trail routes for all levels.

Practical Information

Best Time to Visit

October – April

RAK's mountain location means it is slightly cooler than coastal cities year-round. Winter and spring are perfect for outdoor activities — the mountains can be pleasantly cool (8–15°C at the summit in January). Summer is hot but the mountains remain more bearable than the coast.

Getting Around

RAK is about 100 km north of Dubai — roughly 75–90 minutes by car via the E11 or E311. There is no public transport of note within RAK; a rental car or taxi is essential. Our mountain safari tour includes pickup from RAK hotels and a central RAK city meeting point.

Traveller Tips

  • 1A jacket or fleece is essential for Jebel Jais year-round — the summit is significantly cooler than sea level.
  • 2The Jebel Jais mountain road closes in fog, strong wind, and rain. Check conditions before heading up.
  • 3Book the zipline well in advance during weekends and UAE school holidays.
  • 4RAK has a quieter, more conservative atmosphere than Dubai — dress modestly outside of resort areas.
  • 5Self-driving into the mountains is possible but 4x4 vehicles are strongly recommended for wadi routes.
